Website: caffeinatedlife.net’s Blogoversary!

Posted 10 February, 2014 by Lianne in Website / 55 Comments

Yup, you’ve read that right: this webspace that I call home on the world wide web is seven years old this month (and on the current url it’s one year old; as some of you may recall, I ran under rulethewaves.net for over six years). The actual blogoversary was on the 4th but it’s been a little busy organising my posts around and stuff (and with another giveaway currently running) that I decided to postpone this entry a bit. Besides, how better to start another week than with a celebration? 🙂

It’s been a wonderful seven years of blogging. The first few years were a bit of a mish-mash, trying to figure out what I wanted to really do with my blog, what I wanted to blog about, what I was interested in, etc, etc. I’ve been book blogging (for the most part) quite regularly for the past three to four years. The book blogging community has been so open, eclectic and fun, it’s been a blast chatting with you all and participating (ever so slowly) in various events.

Not my gif, but celebrating Die Nationalmannschaft always makes for appropriate expressions of celebration and jubilation =)

In case anyone is curious, this is the first entry listed on this blog, which was originally a crosspost from my old, temporary blog. Look how small my to-read list was back then!

So here’s a big THANK YOU to everyone who’s dropped by, chatted, participated over the past few years; I haven’t celebrated my blogoversary in the past so this post is making up for it all =P And here’s to looking ahead to another year of fun and conversation (and continuing changes to the more technical aspects of this blog, lol. For example: I’m quite pleased to finally have a shiny, proper social media bar at the bottom of my posts, haha) 🙂

Again, not my gif, but happy minions also make for good points of celebration

So in celebration of this blogoversary, I am hosting a wee book giveaway as a way of saying thank you 🙂 List of books to choose from + contest details after the cut:

Review: Marie Antoinette’s Head + Giveaway

Posted 6 February, 2014 by Lianne in Books / 7 Comments

Marie Antoinette’s Head: The Royal Hairdresser, The Queen, And The Revolution
By: Will Bashor
Format/Source: Hardback courtesy of the author

Marie Antoinette has remained atop the popular cultural landscape for centuries for the daring in style and fashion that she brought to 18th century France. For the better part of the queen’s reign, one man was entrusted with the sole responsibility of ensuring that her coiffure was at its most ostentatious best. Who was this minister of fashion who wielded such tremendous influence over the queen’s affairs? Marie Antoinette’s Head: The Royal Hairdresser, The Queen, and the Revolution charts the rise of Leonard Autié from humble origins as a country barber in the south of France to the inventor of the Pouf and premier hairdresser to Queen Marie-Antoinette.

By unearthing a variety of sources from the 18th and 19th centuries, including memoirs (including Léonard’s own), court documents, and archived periodicals the author, Professor Will Bashor, tells Autié’s mostly unknown story. He chronicles Leonard’s story, the role he played in the life of his most famous client, and the chaotic and history-making world in which he rose to prominence. Besides his proximity to the queen, Leonard also had a most fascinating life filled with sex (he was the only man in a female dominated court), seduction, intrigue, espionage, theft, exile, treason, and possibly, execution. The French press reported that Léonard was convicted of treason and executed in Paris in 1793. However, it was also recorded that Léonard, after receiving a pension from the new King Louis XVIII, died in Paris in March 1820. Granted, Leonard was known as the magician of Marie-Antoinette’s court, but how was it possible that he managed to die twice?

Be sure to stick around as at the end of the post, I am also hosting a book giveaway for a chance to win a copy of this book! (open to US/Canada only; sorry international readers!) Also, be sure to drop by tomorrow, 7 February, as the author will be featured in a guest post related to the topic of his book. See you then!

Books: ‘Becoming Josephine’ Giveaway Winner

Becoming Josephine
By: Heather Webb
Format/Source: Advanced Reading Copy courtesy of Plume/Penguin via NetGalley
My review of the novel

Rose Tascher sails from her Martinique plantation to Paris to trade her Creole black magic culture for love and adventure. She arrives exultant to follow her dreams of attending Court with Alexandre, her elegant aristocrat and soldier husband. But Alexandre dashes her hopes and abandons her amid the tumult of the French Revolution.

Through her savoir faire, Rose secures her footing in high society, reveling in handsome men and glitzy balls—until the heads of her friends begin to roll.

After narrowly escaping death in the blood-drenched cells of Les Carmes prison, she reinvents herself as Josephine, a socialite of status and power. Yet her youth is fading, and Josephine must choose between a precarious independence and the love of an awkward suitor. Little does she know, he would become the most powerful man of his century- Napoleon Bonaparte.

Becoming Josephine is a novel of one woman’s journey to find eternal love and stability, and ultimately to find herself.

Merci beaucoup to everyone who entered the book giveaway contest courtesy of the author and France Book Tours! A winner has been chosen from the entries on the Rafflecopter–Congratulations to Mystica! I hope you enjoy Ms. Webb’s novel! 🙂

Have a wonderful week, everyone, and thanks again!
