Warleggan (Poldarks #4)
By: Winston Graham
Format/Source: eBook; my purchase

When Ross Poldark plunges into a highly speculative mining venture, he risks not only his family’s financial security but also his already-turbulent marriage. When his old flame Elizabeth Warleggan re-enters his life, Ross is tested like never before. But soon, his wife Demelza retaliates, becoming dangerously involved with a handsome Scottish cavalry officer of her own.

With the looming threat of bankruptcy and scandal, the Poldarks now face the possibility of disaster on all fronts. Will they be able to keep it together before everything falls apart?

So after reading Jeremy Poldark (review), I went on to pick up this book as it was sitting on my TBR queue on my eReader.

Jeremy Poldark (Poldarks #3)
By: Winston Graham
Format/Source: eBook; my purchase

Ross Poldark faces the darkest hour of his life in this third novel of the Poldark series. Reeling from the tragic death of a loved one, Captain Poldark vents his grief by inciting impoverished locals to salvage the contents of a ship run aground in a stormóan act for which British law proscribes death by hanging. Ross is brought to trial for his involvement, and despite their stormy marriage, Demelza tries to rally support for her husband, to save him and their family.

But there are enemies in plenty who would be happy to see Ross convicted, not the least of which is George Warleggan, the powerful banker whose personal rivalry with Ross grows ever more intense and threatens to destroy the Poldarks.

And into this setting, Jeremy Poldark, Ross and Demelza’s first son, is born…

At long last I’ve gotten around to the third book in the series. I was in a bit of a historical fiction mood before I went on holiday so apologies on how brief the following review will likely be; it’s been a while between the time I read the book and the time I’m typing this out.

Demelza (The Poldark Saga #2)
By: Winston Graham
Format/Source: eBook; my purchase

Demelza, the miner’s daughter that Poldark rescued from a fairground rabble, is now his wife. Demelza’s efforts to adapt to the ways of the gentry bring her confusion and heartache, despite the joy in the birth of their first child. Additionally the seeds of dispute with Warleggan are sown.

I really enjoyed reading Ross Poldark (review) that I wanted to read the next book and see what happens next to the characters (plus, to stave off the wait for the next season of the show). Of course after the events of the first book I figured I’d be familiar with events in this book as it was covered in series one of the 2015 BBC adaptation but it hasn’t stopped my enjoyment of the book.

Ross Poldark (The Poldark Saga #1)
By: Winston Graham
Format/Source: eBook; my purchase

Cornwall, 1783-1787

Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and family, only to find his father has died, his estate is derelict, and the girl he loved is engaged to another. But then he rescues a half-starved urchin girl and takes her home—an act which, it turns out, will alter his life

So earlier this year BBC aired its new adaptation of Poldark based off the popular series by Winston Graham. I admit, I had never heard of the series until the adaptation came along, and had no idea that it was such a big title in the historical fiction genre (despite being such a big reader of said genre). So I decided to check the book out 🙂
