Monstress: the Blood (Vol. 3)
By: Marjorie M. Liu (Writer), Sana Takeda (Artist), Rus Wooton (Letterer, Designer)
Format/Source: Paperback; my purchase

Maika has spent most of her life learning how to fight, but how will she fare when the only way to save her life…is to make friends?

Collects issues 13-18 of the Hugo Award and British Fantasy Award series.

I picked up this volume the minute it became available but then it languished on my bookshelf because of pesky school. Grrr…

Oh man, what can I say about this book? If things were not already complicated enough for Maika, things get even more complicated here as treaties crumble, old protections dissolve, new enemies arise, and our characters are all smushed in the middle of the complications somewhere. All contending powers have a stake in wanting to get a hold of Maika and whatever secrets lie in her blood and in the monster/god dwelling alongside her, while Maika all along is her typical uncooperative self, struggling to make sense of everything around her and trying to co-exist with the god that becomes more present by the day. That relationship continues to startle and surpise as both sides learn to deal with each other as a reality, like “Yup, we’re stuck together, might as well get used to the whole thing.” It’s interesting too because it’s come to the point where both sides can sort of take a jab at the other’s expense but are brgrudgingly learning to work together, even if they are nowhere close to understanding each other just yet.

Some characters make a reappearance in this volume and Professor Tam Tam’s periodic educational moments continue to intrigue and amuse because of his wee kitten students (so cute). Kippa continues to play the voice of humanity and conscience so to speak, but I’m curious to know why so many characters are intrigued by her as well! And that cliffhanger– D=

My reviews do this series no justice, but suffice to say I’m really enjoying it so far and hope the next volume is released ASAP! I need to know what happens next xD
