China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians #2)
By: Kevin Kwan
Format/Source: eBook; my purchase

On the eve of her wedding to Nicholas Young, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Asia, Rachel should be over-the-moon. She has a flawless Asscher cut diamond from JAR, a wedding dress she loves more than anything found in the salons of Paris, and a fiancée willing to sacrifice his entire inheritance in order to marry her. But Rachel still mourns the fact that her birth father, a man she never knew, won’t be able to walk her down the aisle. Until: a shocking revelation draws Rachel in to a world of Shanghai splendor beyond anything she has ever imagined. Here we meet Carlton, a Ferrari-crashing bad boy known for Prince Harry-like antics; Colette, a celebrity girlfriend chased by fevered paparazzi; and the man Rachel has spent her entire life waiting to meet: her father. Meanwhile, Singapore’s It Girl Astrid Leong is shocked to discover that there is a downside to having a newly-minted Tech Billionaire husband.

A romp through Asia’s most exclusive clubs, auction houses, and estates, China Rich Girlfriend brings us into the elite circles of Mainland China, introducing a captivating cast of characters, and offering an inside glimpse at what it’s like to be gloriously, crazily, China-rich.

At long last, after reading Crazy Rich Asians (review) some two years ago, I’m reading the follow-up. His books are perfect reading for the summer, so I reckon I’ll be reading the third installment next year 😛 Contains some spoilers if you haven’t read either book in the series!

Suffice to say I couldn’t stop reading once I started (if it wasn’t for the fact that I had a day shift the following morning I think I would’ve been up all hours blitzing through the book) 😛 Sure, it took a bit of reorientation trying to remember who’s connected to who, what happened to this person and that, so I kind of wished there was a recap at the start of the book about the events from the first novel, lol. It doesn’t help that now you’re introduced to a whole new cast of characters alongside mentions and appearances by characters from the first novel as now we’re introduced to the mainland elites. But nonetheless it was a rollicking, jet-setting read from start to finish as Rachel and Nick find themselves in mainland China amidst their honeymoon to get to know Rachel’s long-lost father and that side of the family…and all the while punctured with my occasional comment of “Ugh, rich people problems” lol.

But really, it’s a fun read. I had fun getting to know Carlton and Colette and of course reading all the drama about her father and his wife, Kitty and the truth behind her marriage, the Bings. The one that really had me stressed was Astrid and her douche of a husband, Michael; like Astrid I felt sorry for him in the first novel, he seemed harmless enough, but then it really got to his head in this book and it was just too much for me. I really hope Astrid gets her happy ending in the next novel because she deserves it…and Charlie Wu is such a sweetheart.

I don’t know what else to say except I really enjoyed China Rich Girlfriend. I think it was the perk-me-up that I needed as I thought I was about to hit another reading slump, unsure of what to read next with all the books presently on my TBR pile (all chunksters, lol, and not a poetry book in sight). I can’t wait to read the next book in the series when I can–Rich People Problems, lmao, as if I don’t say it enough whilst reading these books–and find out what happens to Rachel, Nick, Astrid, et. al 🙂
