Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day
By: Seanan McGuire
Format/Source: eBook; my purchase

When her sister Patty died, Jenna blamed herself. When Jenna died, she blamed herself for that, too. Unfortunately Jenna died too soon. Living or dead, every soul is promised a certain amount of time, and when Jenna passed she found a heavy debt of time in her record. Unwilling to simply steal that time from the living, Jenna earns every day she leeches with volunteer work at a suicide prevention hotline.

But something has come for the ghosts of New York, something beyond reason, beyond death, beyond hope; something that can bind ghosts to mirrors and make them do its bidding. Only Jenna stands in its way.

I read her novella Every Heart a Doorway (review) last year and greatly enjoyed it. In waiting for the second book in the series, this book came out; the premise piqued my interest and admittedly I had planned on holding off from picking it up but in the end I caved in and picked it up šŸ˜›

Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day was an interesting and haunting read with an interesting world and rules concerning the dead and the way that ghosts operate. I mention this first because it was quite the highlight in the book; whenever I think of this book I think of how I slowly learned the rules of how ghosts interact with the living, how long they stay, taking minutes away from the living, and how they know when they will pass on to the next life. I admit it took me a bit of time to really understand how the give-and-take works but it makes the premise of the story and the elements used more interesting.

The story itself was interesting as well, following Jenna and her life after death and struggling to reconcile with the death of her sister Patty. It’s a thoughtful piece on the importance of life and how we tend of forget what’s really important and how you can’t go back really once you’re dead. The mystery behind why there’s a sudden disappearance amongst the ghostly population seems secondary to Jenna’s character journey.

Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day was overall an interesting read and once again another wonderfully written story by Seanan McGuire. I highly recommend checking out this novella!

  1. It sounds like Seanan McGuire has the sort of imagination I could appreciate… Though I’ve never read a book where the MC has the same name as me, and that might make this book a little weird for me? I think I’ll start with Every Heart, which I just bought and plan on reading it this month.

    • lol good question, I have yet to read a book where the main character has the same name as me (regardless of spelling) xD Hope you enjoy Every Heart a Doorway! šŸ˜€
