List: Some Favourites from 2014

A Happy New Year to you all! If you celebrated last night, I hope you had fun, and I hope you have an awesome 2015 πŸ™‚

So I don’t normally do this favourite lists at the end of the year unless it’s the End of the Year Book Survey (see: my 2014 list), but I decided to do it this year because there’s some memorable standouts that I wanted to share with you all πŸ™‚ By no means is this a definitive list–I’m definitely missing a few in the music section, I reckon–but nonetheless, I highly recommend the following if you’re looking for something to check out today or this year πŸ™‚

A couple of awesome albums were released this year, and I discovered quite a number of new artists along the way.

I discovered this band when I checked out their single of the week, “Human”, on iTunes, which then prompted me to buy the whole album because it’s just awesome! Their music is very atmospheric and dreamy, the lyrics gorgeous. My favourite song from their album is actually “Shallows”, but “Youth” I think was their first single and probably the most well-known song off the album (love this song too…and “Still”…and “Winter”…the whole album, basically).

Jose Gonzales

I’ve listened to some of his music before, but I love the songs he featured in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Toss-up between “Step Out” and “Stay Alive” as my favourit, but “Stay Alive” won in the end, there’s something about it that’s especially poignant (though “Step Out” is quite a celebratory song)

Betty Who

I’ve been waiting since last year for her LP to be released and hurray, it did back in October! “High Society” is still my favourite song from her but I also love “All of You.” Her music is so upbeat! (I generally listen to more alternative and instrumental/classical so her music is quite the change of pace πŸ™‚ )

Ivy and Gold

My most recent discovery, lol. I have their EP Smoke and Mirrors on loop, their music reminds me a bit of Daughter lyrics-wise (I also have another one of their EPs, Awake), the lead singer’s voice is intriguing, and their whole album is fantastic. For some reason “Behind the Mask” has been on loop more than the other songs, it tells such a story.

Leighton Meester

Edit: I can’t believe I forgot to mention Leighton Meester! I always thought she had a lovely singing voice, and I was quite curious and excited when I heard tha tshe finally released an LP. Her music’s pretty good, different from her early pop collaborations but more suitable to her voice, I think (and more of my type of music, which is good too). The whole album is fantastic, I love “Heartstrings” but I think “Entitled” is my favourite song off the album:

In no particular order, a few movies I enjoyed watching last year (but not necessarily released in 2014 (because I’m slow at getting around to movies like that)):

  • The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (review) — I need to rewatch this soon, I’m all <3 just remembering it xD
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel (review)
  • Whispers of the Heart (review)
  • The Book Thief (review)
  • Captain America: the Winter Soldier (review)

Honourable mentions: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (review), Before Sunrise & Before Sunset (review ; review)

(In which I pretty much list all of the television shows I posted about this year πŸ˜› )

And that’s it for this list! Did any of the following piqued your interest? Have any on queue? Watched/listened and enjoyed it? Let me know!

  1. Yay for ‘Call the Midwife’ (so good!), ‘Captain America’ and Leighton Meester. I’ve been meaning to look into her music and haven’t yet. Now I’ll certainly have to. πŸ™‚
