A group of intergalactic criminals are forced to work together to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe.
I admit, I was one of many who didn’t know anything about this Marvel title when it was announced that this movie was going to be made. But I was pretty much sold by the story when I saw the teaser trailer featuring Blue Suede and introducing the characters–the trailer was so goofy and off-beat and different, I just had to watch it.
How much fun was that? I watched this movie with my family and, like me, greatly enjoyed it. The trailer was but a taste of how action-packed and humourous it can be; indeed the seriousness or gravity of a scene can be temporarily relieved with an offhand commet or an unexpected debate. A lot of my favourite character interations is when all five members are interacting with each other, they’re such a motley group and yet they work and their dynamic beyond their initial disagreements was fantastic.
All of the characters were great, and amongst the principal guardians you got enough backstory to keep you informed about who they are and how they came to be the person they are. A lot of attention of course is given to Peter Quill as he’s the most familiar character and a gateway into the universe; he’s a smart ass and a rogue but he also has good intentions, a hero in the making. Rocket Raccoon and Groot obviously steal the show but there’s a lot going on behind Rocket’s tough facade, and of course Groot is just quietly wonderful <3 Gamora is pretty awesome and badass. Her dynamic with Nebula very interesting, both in the comic movie; I'd be intrested to see this expand next movie. And while Drax a bit of an argh for calling Ronan into Knowhere and in the hopes of taking on Ronan on his own, he really came to his own by the end of the movie. That and he’s a bit nutty in his own way.
The secondary characters were also great, from Yondu to Corpsman Dey. I wish Glenn Close had more screentime as Nova Prime, but she was pretty awesome. Is it really weird though that I wished we got a bit more screentime from Ronan the Accuser? Dude was legit insane, and positively terrifying in his perspective/framework of why he’s doing what he’s doing; Lee Pace does bombastic megalomania nicely.
At times it felt a little jumpy/choppy with the short sequences, but the story moved non-stop with everyone after the guardians and things not going quite as planned (the start of the prison breakout sequence was hilarious with Groot in the background). And the 70s music playing when it did = excellent 🙂
So yeah, highly enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, it was just an awesome, epic, fun ride 🙂 Can’t wait for the second movie to come out!
