Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts

Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. share exciting plans for the weekend, rants on things they’ve encountered during the week, etc.).

  1. So my birthday was last Sunday, haha. It was a quiet celebration, as always; I think the highlight was the box of strawberry tarts that we had πŸ˜€ I also finally got around to watching Taken, which means I can now freely reference lines from that movie having actually seen it (I made a reference to it one time to my best friend; alas, she didn’t get it) πŸ˜›
  2. Other things going on in my life: school is busy. I don’t know why, but it seems like I have a lot more assignments/things going on for my classes than in previous semesters O_o I had two tests this week, which is probably why I’m so grumpy about it, lol! Clinical is also busy but I like my placement and I’m learning/utilising a lot.
  3. This is pretty cool: Aerial views of Europe taken from a drone
  4. Also, I really love this video from a few weeks ago: Manuel Neuer, never change πŸ™‚
  5. I won a gift certificate to from The Parchment Girl back in August but I didn’t get around to using it until recently. I got this lovely leather book jacket & a bookmark, which arrived last week. It’s quite pretty, the only drawback is that it fits perfectly with the UK-sized paperbacks (and Penguin Classics, as far as I can tell) but not the North American sized ones xD Nonetheless, me likes
  6. Okay, there’s been a lot of talk about this in recent weeks, so I have to ask…Is anyone here on Ello? πŸ˜› If so, thoughts so far?
  7. Has anyone ever done a clean-up of their friends list on GoodReads? I’m aslo thinking of doing it…
  8. I’m usually a little more prompt about reading for blog tours but I’ve only started reading Sherry Jones’ The Sharp Hook of Love now. Granted, my day for featuring this book isn’t for another two weeks, but I feel like I’m cutting it a bit close anyway *shrugs* *has a thing with reading things by a certain date*
  9. As if having a large to-read pile isn’t enough, I also have a list now called “priority reading” within that to-read list xP It’s come to that, especially as I received a number of ARCs some time ago + I’m planning out book reviews to be featured in next month’s Sci-Fi Month. Good times xD (Sneak preview: Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice? Amazing)
  10. I’ve started prepping for NaNoWriMo with help of The Plot Whisperer Workbook. It’s actually really helpful with plotting out events and characters arcs and stuff; I’m going to use it when I revise the other writing project that I finished earlier this year. Who here is participating in NaNoWriMo this year? πŸ™‚

And that’s about it for me! How was your week? Also, a Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians!!!

Hope you have a wonderful long weekend! (you know I will ;))

  1. Happy late birthday!! Sounds like you had fun πŸ™‚ I wish I wasn’t at work so I could see the Neur clip *pouts* I’ll have to check it later. And I actually JUST started cleaning out Goodreads friends yesterday! I just want to make sure that when I’m looking at potential books to read it’s not a bunch of random people (or authors who sneaked into my friends list when I wasn’t checking), but actually people whose opinions matter to me, since that’s primarily what I use it for. In any case, hopefully things calm down soon, and once again happy late birthday!

    • Thanks so much Elizabeth! πŸ™‚

I was recently looking at my Updates feed and realised that I don’t remember where I “met” half the people on my list =S And I’m sort of getting a wee bit spammed with recommendations and group invitations by others, so I guess a clean-up is in order…

  2. Belated Happy Birthday! Those tarts look like they were delicious!

I’ve never cleaned up my Goodreads f-list but I did clean out my to-read shelf recently. So tedious (so many books I had random shoved on there lol)

Nanowrimo! I’ll be participating this year because I have one exam in early November and then I’m freeeeee (aside from work…) but I have a feeling I’m going to want to spend most of my time reading, not writing πŸ˜›

    • Thanks so much! And those strawberry tarts were πŸ˜‰

I’d be scared to do a clean-up of my shelves, haha, kudos to you for getting through it!

Nice that you only hae one exam next month–lucky! πŸ˜€

  3. Happy belated birthday! I am having one at the end of the month, but I could do without it…LOL.

I stopped doing blog tours…hated the feeling of the looming deadline. Too much like work!

I do read Amazon Vine ARCs, and they have their own deadlines, but those are books I’ve picked and wanted (I stopped choosing books from unknown authors unless others have recommended them).

Also, I have cut down drastically on the number of those books I allow myself…I have too many books I’ve purchased that are getting short shrift.

    • Thanks so much! And in case I don’t get around to it later, a happy early birthday to you πŸ™‚

I’ve gotten a bit picky with participating in blog tours this year but I think I will definitely take your route next year and stop altogether (unless it’s for a book I really really really want to read, haha) as having deadlines press on me aren’t fun (a side reason why I also stopped dropping by and requesting often on NetGalley). Good point about the books you’ve purchased getting pushed aside in the process–definitely feeling it with my TBR pile! xP

  4. Again happy birthday Lianne! I’m so glad you had a lovely day and that you spent – at least part of it, doing something fun. πŸ™‚

  5. Belated Happy Birthday! Those strawberry tarts sound SO delicious!

Good luck with NaNoWriMo. Hopefully you’ll be able to accomplish all its goals. I would love to participate in it too but alas, November is the busiest month of the school year what with all our events and examinations. πŸ™

    • Thanks so much Kayla! Hee, the strawberry tarts are my favourite from this particular bakery we go to xD

And thanks re: NaNo! I totally hear you, it’s only in recent years that I’m able to participate in NaNo because November is always the busiest month when it comes to school =S

    • Thank you! Sadly the celebration was capped off with finishing an assignment due the following day, but otherwise it was a nice day πŸ™‚
