Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts

Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. share exciting plans for the weekend, rants on things they’ve encountered during the week, etc.).

Not my gif but lmao, easily one of my favourite reactions throughout the WC so far πŸ˜€ Oh, Klinsi

  1. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these! June was a bit crazy, the tests and midterms sort of stacked up against me =S This month isn’t so bad but there are the group presentations that I have to do (ugh, group work. Who devised this mode of torture? My groups are, for the most part, good and coordinated, but there’s this one presentation that makes no sense as a presentation and would’ve worked better as an essay topic < / ends academic critique >
  2. It’s getting super hot outside now and me no like πŸ™
  3. I haven’t written in over a month. This realisation has left me D= I wanted to do Camp NaNoWriMo this month but school is shaping up to be a disaster in the making, so I guess I’ll have to make my own little Camp NaNoWriMo next month or something….
  4. I never reviewed the book a few years ago but the trailer for S.J. Watson’s Before I Go To Sleep is out! (trailer here) Pretty psyched for it, might have to re-read the book now πŸ˜‰
  5. Okay, for some reason, I never got around to finishing The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I only remembered earlier this week because I ordered a copy of the novelisation, lol *oops* Thank goodness a company picked them up and packaged the episodes up on iTunes and elsewhere because I’m one of those people who can’t really sit in front of YouTube for long periods of time (well, sometimes, but not all the time), so it’s nice to have access of the episodes somewhere to watch whenever I want (without killing my bandwidth). In other news, Emma Approved is pretty amusing too (despite Emma (review) not being my favourite Austen novel)
  6. World Cup! Despite of things being rather crappy on the offline segment of things, having the World Cup has been the highlight of it all. If you follow me on Twitter, you’d notice that my entire feed recently, when it’s not about latest book reviews posted here, are my live tweets from the games. And all the feels (I hope this cut works, for those who don’t follow):

    • This has been a pretty surprising/random World Cup so far: most of the teams expected to make the Round of 16 did not (including my teams 2 and 3, England and Italy) and there were some surprise inclusions, such as Costa Rica and Greece (oh Greece, I would’ve been even more shocked if you had survived yesterday’s game)
    • Breakout stars are always fun to watch; Colombia’s James Rodriguez is always at the right place at the right time, and Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa is boss. I mean, look at this save:

Not my gif; Ochoa easily my new favourite goalkeeper after Neuer and Buffon

Am gutted that Mexico didn’t advance, because they have been having a good tournament. It’s brutal to have pitted them against Netherlands (who has also been having a good tournament)
    • I am by no stretch a Cristiano Ronaldo fan (he can be really cocky in a not-so-amusing way), but I can’t deny that he is a fantastic footballer. I mean, look at his footwork here:

      Not my gif; amazing

I literally chuckled when I saw him do that, US was parking the bus there. It’s too bad his team isn’t stronger as a collective unit, it’s sad and a bit frustrating to see him try to lift the whole squad up himself and pull them through to the next round.
    • Germany! I don’t have time to watch the club levels as often as I want, so it’s nice when I can see my German boys play πŸ™‚ I didn’t get to see the Germany vs Ghana match because I was at clinical but I was so happy to hear that Miroslav Klose made his 15th goal and topping the ranks with the likes of Ronaldo, etc. *tear* I hope he gets to score again soon and break the record πŸ™‚ And yay for Mueller scoring lots and lots too, he was my favourite breakout player from 2010 and he continues to impress now. Also, I really loved some of the commentary with their matches. For example, this:

Not my gif; Lahm and Klose, running up to block that ball like the bosses they are

Lahm was pretty quiet for most of the Germany vs USA match but then he did this wonderful save and the commentator’s like “Lahm said no”, lmao. That should be on a shirt or something. And, “This is why Lahm is captain. This is why Germany wins.” Yeeeesssss…But yeah, they’ve been awesome so far, and they look so happy on instagram and Twitter and whatnot πŸ˜€
    • Edit: But omg, that match against Algeria…what is going on with my German boys? They are not playing at their usual best (tired as they were, hot as it was). I hope they get it together before their match against France…I was pretty much in shreds the other day by the end of that match, not thinking straight and everything ;_;
    • The whole Suarez-biting incident was ridiculous, insane, and terribly un-sportsmanship (or whatever the word is for that…and it’s not even the first time he’s done it!). Though the memes that came out of it were pretty funny. Oh, and their defense about it was all sorts of bonkers–we saw in slow motion, live HD!
    • I was quite sad when Italy crashed out from the group levels, I miss seeing their pretty faces and the awesomeness that is Gianluigi Buffon out there.
    • Also, it is imperative that one team with Puma as their kit providers make it to at least the semis as their shirts are so tight, I’m surprised they haven’t ripped them open out on the pitch yet πŸ˜‰
    • If you haven’t checked this out and have been tuning in to the World Cup matches, you should: World Cup, brick-by-brick. It’s hilarious and so cute. I wonder how much time it took to do all of it…
    • On a final note: please no more extra time and PKs ;_; I don’t think my nerves can take it…

And that’s about it for me! How was your week? To my US blogger friends, I hope you have a wonderful long weekend! πŸ™‚ Oh, and on a final note, this cracked me up (poor Marcelo couldn’t open it and Cristiano Ronaldo was not having any of it):

Not my gif; lmao forever

  1. Riv

Oo World Cup extra edition. LOVE the gif with Lahm and Klose, it’s hilarious πŸ˜€ I noticed that in the first playoff round the “big” teams tended to play under their abilities, but Germany probably the least because Algerians put on such a fight. They played really well as well, I still think Germany will have no problems in further rounds.

    • They’re like, synchronised, lol πŸ˜€

I love your positivity about the “big” teams’ performances (and that’s true; I was talking to a classmate at how they’re also being very careful with some of their key players, not playing them for the whole 90 min to save them for the bigger matches). I am perhaps flailing over today’s match xP

  2. FOOTBALL! I am so shocked over this year’s events. I mean half of the Europe is home, big names all out, more or less. I am so not invested this year as I have been before. I mean when we were on holidays in 2006, I wasn’t going swimming because of football, so yeah it’s been serious. Not this year. Kind of meh about it. Now just waiting for Germans to win even though they’re not my no. 1 team (that’d be Spain and wtf…).
Suarez tho… man what he did was not okay, but the internet is overreacting like a boss! They’re making such a big deal out of this, forgetting all the other crappy athletes that are their heroes despite their shit. So yeah pretty over that now. -.-
The gifs are totally awesome haha πŸ˜€ And the legos are impressive,

Good luck with school work, team work sucks ass and I hope it resolves as best as it can for you!

    • I know, eh? The fact that half of them crashed out before the Round of 16 is still mindboggling. For a moment the other day, I thought Germany might be the only European team left but the Netherlands got through πŸ˜›

Thanks for the good wishes, I got through the team work presentation yesterday that I was dreading, so I’m happy again, lmao (still have another group presentation to do later this month, but that one’s pretty straightforward, thank goodness) πŸ™‚

  3. Oh my GOD I was totally dying when I read your comment about the tight shirts!!! (But so, so true. And also yummy :D) The games have been so crazy this year! England, who is the team of my heart, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHIT. And Spain?! I mean, I’m not a Spain fan, but that was just embarrassing. I could care less about Italy though ahaha I’ve always hated them (even if they are very, very pretty). And the number of games that have had to go into overtime is just really shocking. And I feel like a lot of the traditionally underdog teams have just done a spectacular job this year – Costa Rica was a huge surprise! And the US, even if they lost the last game, played beautifully. They’ve improved so much since the last world cup and they’re such a young team that I feel like next time around they’re only going to be better.

    • πŸ˜‰ And the contrast is quite funny when you compare the kits from the 80s and 90s, or even as recent as 2006 xD

England gets a pass for me, if only because they played a lot better than they had in recent int’l tournaments. I have hopes for them come Euro 2016 πŸ™‚

Same here, I’m not a Spain fan (as my brother reminded me, I’m still bitter from what happened in 2008 against Germany πŸ˜› ), but I really felt bad for them and their fans after a while. I thought they would bounce back, but yikes at their tactics D= I expect a massive overhaul of the team in the next two years.

Agreed, it’s fantastic how a lot of teams we didn’t expect did so well in this tournament; Costa Rica hanging on to the end was wow! I thought they had a real chance making it to the semis. The next WC should be interesting! πŸ˜€

  4. *snort* I used to hate Ronaldo. With the same intensity that I hate Barcelona (and Argentina by default), but then I sort of fell into the ‘oh Real Madrid are playing, oops I became a Madridista, oops I own a couple of Alonso shirts’ and fell a bit in love with him? Like. He’s a total knob sometimes, but they all are, really lol

Spain though *sobs* they all seem to be enjoying their early vacations though.

I really hope Germany beat Brazil. I am so sick of third place. Dnw third three times in a row. I felt kind of bad for France, and the guys that were crying (their kits, daaaammmmmn boys – I mean, there has to be something to keep me awake at 2am, so…)

    • lol! That’s true, they all have their egos to varying degrees xD OMG, today’s match…I also want Germany to advance to the finals with all of my heart (though I try not to say it out loud too much because my dad’s a Brasil fan πŸ˜‰ ), it’s been heartbreaking to see them try and try and try and fall back to third place ;_; *knocks on wood* *wears German NT shirt today*

All of the teams with them tight kits are out now! Boo…my hope now is that Germany continues wearing their white kits; our boys look good in them πŸ˜€ *thumbs up*
