Writing: The Year Ahead in Writing

Seeing as I’ve already made a TTT post on bookish resolutions for 2013, why not a writing post too? =P

To date I have a number of writing projects at various stages of the overall writing process. Most of them are at the completed first draft stage but I’m hoping to get some of those moving this year, see which ones have the most potential to move forward and polish up. I guess it helps that I haven’t touched any of those drafts since I’ve completed them. For this 2013 I decided that I will be focusing on 2 particular projects:

  • My NaNoWriMo 2011 draft “Displacement” — Of all of the completed first drafts that I skimmed through some time ago, this one has the potential to move forward especially because I have a pretty good sense of what needs to be edited, expanded on and tossed out and replaced with. Between the first draft and the notes I have right now for the edits, I’m pretty excited because there’s a lot more character expansion now that I have a better idea of who these characters are. There’s still the world-building issue and the mechanics to work out (it’s a science fiction story; not a hard sci-fi story per se but the science still plays a role in fuelling the drama and journey of these characters) but I’m confident that I can move ahead with the edits in the next few weeks.
  • Untitled fantasy WIP — Okay, a bit of a cheat here: the first draft has not been written yet. I’ve only started writing the notes and the background information down. But it’s a story whose fragments have been playing over and over in my head for a few years now, shifting depending on what the danger or the plot is, but always there in one form or another. Figured now’s a good a time as any to at least start writing the draft down. Sure, it might not be the best of ideas to be writing this draft as I’m editing the other but I used to do it back then, I’m sure I can adjust accordingly later. The important thing is that I start writing.

I considered starting to edit my NaNo draft from 2012 but decided against it; much as I loved writing about that character (the story really developed after the character first came to mind), I need a good deal of time away from the story before I can look at it again with fresh eyes.

Anyways, given that there are a few changes going on IRL at the moment I’m not putting a time frame to both these projects except that it would be nice to have the edits for my NaNo 2011 draft done by the end of this year and be somewhere ahead with the second project, even halfway through draft one (I have a vague sense of where the story is going but in terms of length, I can’t say).

As such, while it was fun that I participated in Camp NaNoWriMo last year, I won’t be this year due to the above two projects (on top of my ongoing commitment to a few publications). As for NaNoWriMo this November, we’ll see. Right now it looks like a no (because of IRL things) but anything can happen between now and October/November soooo…

And that’s about it with what’s going on with my writing at the moment. I might do the occasional update depending on where I’m at (or depending whether or not I’m in the middle of a meltdown with my writing =P). We’ll see, fingers crossed with this whole endeavour! =D
