Movie: Speculation & Wishlist for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

(this is not the official poster to the movie but a viral poster that’s out on the web // source)

Well, now that I’ve reviewed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (review), here’s my speculations and for the second movie coming out…next year ;_; Contains super massive spoilers if you haven’t seen the first movie or read the book–moreso with the book

Having watched the movie, I think I have a sense of how the Peter Jackson and the editing crew divided the remainder of the novel. I think the second movie will be covering chapters 7 – 13/14, starting with the Company meeting Beorn. There’s been speculation online whether the second movie will end with Smaug’s death or not; I think it could go either way. To heighten the tension, it could end with Smaug menacingly making his way to Laketown. Or, to resolve the Smaug storyline, it could end with his death, but then they will need to set up the remaining chapters re: the Battle of the Five Armies so that could make for a super long movie. I’m more partial towards the former, especially as there’s likely to be some major developments from the Dol Guldur storyline; I haven’t re-read the appendices re: this half of the storyline so I’m not sure how much will be covered there.

Anyways, things I’m excited for in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug?

  • Beorn’s lodgings. Will Gandalf be introducing the dwarves exactly like in the book? I hope so (though it would likely be shortened), it was pretty hilarious xD
  • Mirkwood. Thranduil has a very interesting outfit, so I wonder what his kingdom looks like. Plus, reading the details over and over again, I can’t wait to see it translated on-screen, the mix between ethereal and elven and that dark and ominous nature brought on by the Necromancer’s presence in the south.
  • Speaking of Mirkwood, I’m expecting a really haunting, intriguing theme song for it <3 Heck, I'm looking forward to the next soundtrack in general! =P
  • The spider sequence always gives me the creeps but I am looking forward to it because it’s one of those moments that’s really important to building up Bilbo’s character, leading them when Thorin isn’t around or is equally dismayed by the situation before them
  • Thranduil. He was pretty bamf in the first movie while not uttering a single syllable so I can’t wait to see what it’s going to be like when he does speak! It’ll be curious too as the elves from Mirkwood rarely venture out so I wonder how he will speak =)
  • The barrel sequence =D
  • Smaug. It looks like he’s blue (from what we saw at the end of the first movie) which is not how I pictured him but whatever, I’m looking forward to see how design perceived him for the big screen =)
  • Bilbo confronting Smaug. It’s such a moment for Bilbo because, while he’s still frazzled by the moment, he’s no longer as petrified as at the start of the journey. There’s this lovely line in the book that describes that moment of transformation: “It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterwards were nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait.” (p. 200). I can’t wait!

That’s all I can think of but I’m sure there’s plenty other sequences I’m looking forward to =P There’s also a couple of things I hope they will include in the movie (wishful thinking depending on how much they can squeeze in–one can hope, right? ^_~):

  • The dwarves grumbling at the edge of Mirkwood when Gandalf departs from their Company. I thought it was a hilarious moment because the dwarves were so upset that Gandalf was leaving that Gandalf got fed up with their sullenness and chides them all for their behaviour.
  • I really hope they include the sequence where Bombur is out cold during their venture through Mirkwood and talks about the lovely dream he had about a great dinner and the others had to carry him for a good while. It was hilarious in the book, I hope it made it in the movie xD
  • More of Elrond in his regal outfits and hopefully his bad-ass armour *crosses fingers* (if not in this movie then definitely in the final installment =P)
  • A Thranduil-Legolas scene, please? I’ve always wondered what their interaction would be like as Legolas never mentions his father in the books (or if he does it was just in passing). Is it a sort of cool, detached relationship or would it be that only moment when you don’t see Thranduil all calm and detached as in the first scene of the first movie? I guess in general I’m curious to see how Thranduil will be portrayed, lol, since he only had a handful of lines in the book. Suffice to say he’ll be different from Galadriel, Elrond, etc.

And just a bit of a throwback to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey but I was excited to hear that there were a bunch of scenes that were deleted and that will be included in the extended edition (omg, this EE is going to run 4 hours–not complaining though! Haha) and one of the early trailers to the movie does provide the hint that there are a number of scenes either missing or that will be appearing in the next two installments. I was reading up something on Dol Guldur on Empire Online and came across this screencap. I don’t remember if I mentioned in my review that we were missing a bit of Bilbo’s perspective in the Rivendell sequence but it looks like it was cut–can we hope for an Elrond-Bilbo interaction scene? A reference to the return of the King? =D *weeps happily* I’m already excited for the DVD…

Anyways, that’s it from me (before I go on and on about this)! Is there anything you’re looking forward to in particular for the next movie? And ideas of what else will be included from the book? =D
