Writing: NaNoWriMo [Day 8]

It has begun!

Okay, to be honest I haven’t been writing every day. I’ve been working on my articles for the other publications I’m currently contributing to and there were events peppered here and there so I’ve only actually sat down and wrote for a while for maybe…four days?

So how is it going so far? Well, to be honest, it’s been all over the place. I’m not writing chronologically; thanks to Scrivener (love this program btw) I can sort of jump around and write the scenes that stick out in my mind the most first. I plan to then go back and write in the scenes that connect those big scenes together. This is certainly not the way I usually write but I want to jot these scenes down before the fade away or morph into something else.

My Scrivener corkboard yesterday

Another fun thing that didn’t occur to me until I started writing: I mentioned in a thread about languages on the NaNoWriMo forums that I’m writing this novel in English. That’s not 100% true; some of the dialogue is actually in Italian =P It’s an interesting exercise on my part because it enables me to practice my Italian grammar/language, learn a few new words along the way and it just makes the story a whole lot more…authentic, I guess? Visceral in the culture it’s rooted in? Either way, I’m having a lot of fun with it; maybe one day when I’m more fluent I can write a short story or novella wholly in Italian ^_~

As for the story itself…well, it’s there, lol. Notice that I haven’t mentioned what the plot is about ^_~ I don’t know why, I guess it’s because I’m a little protective about the plot of my story and fearful that the idea might be scooped away or something (which would a) suck and b) be very annoying). We’ll see if that changes as we go but just to give you guys a hint of what I’m doing

  1. the story is set in the present day (so contemporary fiction, which is a change of pace since I usually write science fiction or fantasy or a period piece)
  2. there’s a crime investigation involved (again, something different, I don’t normally write mysteries though I enjoy watching them ^_~)
  3. It’s set in New York; working title of the draft is “The Streets of New York” because I couldn’t think of anything snazzier so I stuck to something reflecting the setting of the story
  4. Italians are involved (hence the language entry)

I guess the test will be the next few days to see how far in I can get. I have a clear sense of the characters–if anything, that’s more of the focal point than the mystery/the part that interests me more–which is great but it’ll be nice to see them more fleshed out on the Scrivner document than in my head, you know?

Anyways, that’s about it from me for now. Should actually go into the Scrivener file and work on it rather than just talk about it =P

  1. I might copy your idea to give away hints in a post. I’ve done one, but what’s the fun in just that? I’ve always been really tight lipped about my ideas, but now that that my story is taking shape it’s hard to keep quiet! I guess it’s like when ladies great pregnant and swear they won’t tell until 12 weeks and then end up calling their friends two days after finding out!

    • lol, I like your analogy! Same here about keeping mum about my ideas, I don’t think I’ve even told my brother the whole scope of my story (and I tell him most of my ideas–he’s even read first drafts of most of my short stories). But dropping hints here and there are fun 😀 Hope your NaNo is going well! I’ve gotten sorely behind *blushes*
