A new week means a new issue of Discourse Magazine! My article for this week is “Have the Portuguese People Rejected Austerity?”, pp. 19 – 20 (or pp. 21 – 22 if you’re following the Adobe Reader count). Developments in Portugal have been interesting from an academic perspective because a) Portugal up until now has been considered by the EU to be a model student in implementing all of the conditions attached to their bailout and b) Portugal doesn’t have a big protest culture. So to see a good percentage of the population out on the streets demanding an end to these measures is an interesting turn of events. But then you read the details of these measures and yeah, I totally feel for them, you can only demand so much from people to satisfy these requirements. It also raises the question of whether austerity measures do make a big difference when re-structuring one’s economy.
On a side note, this was a pretty big event, I’m surprised that not very many newspapers featured it in their international news sections (I’m looking at you, US newspapers).
Anyways, be sure to check out this latest issue of Discourse! You can download it on the website, where you can also subscribe to get it immediately in your inbox whenever the latest issue is released. You can also follow them on Twitter and Facebook. Enjoy!
